Bir Savaş Romanı Denemesi: Charles Percy Snow’un The Light and The Dar

Abstract

One of the important twentieth century English novelists Charles Percy Snow (1905), was born in Leicester, which was an important industrial city, as a son of a factory worker. After completing his primary education and most of his secondary education in Leicester, he graduated from Leicester University in 1928. He then went on to work at Christ College, where he received a scholarship to physics at Cambridge University. Snow, who made his first novel experiments at this university, took his first steps in writing. Snow, as both an academician and a fiction writer, fictionalised many events happening in his novels in the universities. In the 1930s Snow began to publish the 11-volume novel sequence known as the Strangers and Brothers. His novels are a quiet and meticulous analysis of bureaucratic man and the corrupting influence of power. The Light and The Dark novel, the subject of this article, was published in 1947 and shed light on the political and social events of 1939- 1946. In this article, The Light and The Dark, was analysed in the light of Marxist literary theory. The influence of Nazism on the scientists depicted in the fiction was presented. The social criticism of Snow presented through his novel under consideration. The social control mechanisms in the novels handled. Besides, how these novels challenged the Western capitalist system and how they also served to create a kind of awareness in readers about social, economic and political practices to control the members of the society were questioned. Yirminci yüzyılın önemli İngiliz romancılarından Charles Percy Snow 15 Ekim 1905’te bir fabrika içsinin çocuğu olarak o dönemde önemli bir sanayi şehri olan Leicester’da doğdu. İlk ve orta öğrenimine Leicester’da devam eden yazar, 1928 yılında Leicester üniversitesinden mezun olmuş ve çalışmalarına fizik alanında devam etmiştir. Daha sonra ise Cambridge Üniversitesi’nde fizik bursu kazanan Snow, Christ College’da çalışmalarına devam etmiştir. Bu üniversitede ilk roman denemelerini yapan Snow, yazarlığa ilk adımını atmıştır. Snow hem akademisyen hem de kurgu yazarı olarak romanlarındaki birçok olayı üniversitelerde kurgulamıştır. 1930 yılında 11 serilik roman dizisini yazan Snow, genel olarak bürokratik hayata aşina olmuş insanların titiz ve detaylı bir analizi yapmış ve gücün insanları yozlaştıran etkisini ele almıştır. Snow’un çalışmamıza konu olan The Light and The Dark adlı romanı 1947 yılında yayınlanmış ve 1939-1946’lı yılların siyasi ve toplumsal olaylarına önemli derecede ışık tutmuştur. Bu makalede, The Light and The Dark (1947) Marksist edebiyat eleştirisi ışığında incelenmiştir. Nazizm’in kurguda betimlenen bilim adamlarının üzerindeki etkisi örnekleriyle sunulmuştur. Snow’un toplum eleştirisi incelenen romanları üzerinden verilmiş ve romanlardaki toplumsal kontrol mekanizmaları ele alınmıştır. Romanların Batının kapitalist sistemine nasıl karşı çıktığı, ayrıca toplumdaki insanları kontrol etmeye yönelik toplumsal, ekonomik veya politik pratikler konusunda okurda farkındalık yaratmaya nasıl hizmet ettiği sorgulanmıştır.
