Uluslararası öğrencilerin COVID-19 pandemisi deneyimleri: Recep Tayyip Erdoğan Üniversitesi örneği

Abstract

Türkiye’de öğrenim gören uluslararası öğrencilerin sayısı her geçen yıl giderek artmaktadır. Bu durum uluslararası öğrencilere yönelik akademik çalışmaların yapılması ihtiyacını ve gerekliliğini de gündeme getirmektedir. Bu çalışmanın temel amacı Recep Tayyip Erdoğan Üniversitesi’nde (RTEÜ) öğrenim gören uluslararası öğrencilerin COVID-19 pandemisi deneyimlerinin keşfedilmesidir. Bu çalışmada nitel araştırma yöntemleri içinde yer alan fenomenolojik araştırma deseni kullanılmıştır. Bu araştırmanın çalışma grubunu Recep Tayyip Erdoğan Üniversitesi’nde öğrenim gören 587 uluslararası öğrenci oluşturmaktadır. Araştırmada amaçlı örneklem yöntemleri arasında yer alan maksimum çeşitlilik örneklemi kullanılmıştır. Araştırmada toplam 20 uluslararası öğrenci ile derinlemesine görüşmeler gerçekleştirilmiş ve veriler betimsel analiz yöntemi ile analiz edilmiştir. Elde edilen bulgular (1) COVID-19 pandemisi hakkındaki düşünceler, (2) COVID-19 pandemisindeki gündelik yaşam pratikleri/deneyimleri, (3) Pandemi sürecinde yaşadıkları zorluklar, (4) Pandemi sonrasındaki gelecek planları ve (5) Uzaktan eğitim süreci ile ilgili düşünceler olmak üzere beş başlık altında sunulmuştur. COVID-19 pandemisinin katılımcılar üzerindeki etkisine bakıldığında ekonomik ve psikolojik sorunlar başta olmak üzere barınma, eğitim ve sağlık gibi temel alanlarda sorunlar yaşadıkları tespit edilmiştir. Buna rağmen katılımcıların genel olarak COVID-19 pandemisine ilişkin orta ve uzun vadede olumlu, gelecekleri hakkında umutlu, uzaktan eğitim süreci hakkında olumsuz düşüncelere sahipken bilgi ve iletişim teknolojilerine erişim imkânlarının yetersiz olduğu sonucuna varılmıştır.

The number of international students studying in Turkey is increasing each year. This situation raises the need and necessity of conducting academic studies on international students. The main purpose of this study is to explore the experiences of international students studying at Recep Tayyip Erdoğan University (RTEU) during the COVID-19 pandemic process. In this study, phenomenological research design was used in accordance with the qualitative research method. The population of this study consists of 587 international students studying at Recep Tayyip Erdoğan University. Maximum variation sampling, which is among the purposive sampling methods, was used in the study. In-depth interviews were conducted with a total of 20 international students and the data were analyzed by descriptive analysis method. Descriptive analysis method was used to analyze the data. Findings were presented under five headings: (1) Ideas on COVID-19 pandemic, (2) Daily life practices/experiences during COVID-19 pandemic, (3) Problems encountered during the pandemic process, (4) Future plans after the pandemic, and (5) Distance education. Considering the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on the participants, it has been determined that they have problems in basic needs such as housing, education and health, particularly economic and psychological problems. Despite this, it was concluded that the participants were generally positive about COVID-19 outbreak and the pandemic process in the medium and long term, hopeful about their future, negative about the distance education process, and they had insufficient opportunities in terms of accessing information and communication technologies.
