Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of the analysis technique that considers the soil-structure interaction in buildings with seismic base isolators. Taking the soil-structure interaction into consideration, especially in the analysis of buildings sitting on soft soils, provides more precise results. However, in structures where seismic base isolators are used, this benefit decreases as the vibrations in the ground affect the structure by being damped. The effect of considering the soil-structure interaction in such buildings on the results is still an issue that needs to be investigated. For this purpose, within the scope of the study; a 7-storey sample building plan with suitable features for the use of base isolators was selected. Four different models were created for the selected structure. In the first two models, a structure without a base isolator was built into the ground and then modelled with the ground. In the next two models, the seismic base isolator is included in the solution. Dynamic time-history analysis was applied to all created models for 11 different earthquake records. As a result of the analyses, the changes in the reactions such as accelerations, shear forces and drifts acting on the structure were examined in fixed model and in the model with 3D soil. In case of non-base isolated structure, resulting responses are fairly big while in case of base isolated structure, it is seen that resulting responses of the structure are small.
